Baths and hot springs
The biggest difference between the western and Japanese idea of taking a bath is that you don’t wash yourself inside the bath tub at all.   Soaping, scrubbing and rinsing of limbs and hair are done outside the bath tub.
Only when you finished washing yourself outside the bath tub, you can enjoy hot spring to soak and relax. The hot spring is fit to be used by several people.
Even in “communal” (shared, yet sex segregated)hot springs, one goes into the hot spring naked with no swimwear.
